SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A 28-year-old man shot after leaving a Walmart store was later pronounced dead at a Salem hospital, police said.

Officers said Bryan Knorr had just exited the store at 1940 Turner Rd. SE in Salem when he was confronted by a lone man in a gold SUV at about 6 a.m.

Words were exchanged between the two men and the gunman opened fire. Once police and paramedics responded, Knorr was rushed to Salem Hospital, where he died.

Salem police detectives said it appears the suspect had been waiting for Knorr outside the store, which was open at the time of the shooting.

Detectives said there's a vehicle of interest in the crime -  a gold Honda SUV or CRV. It has a white temporary registration mounted in the rear window, plus a blue placard mounted where the license plate is normally displayed.

A police lieutenant said there are no signs at this point that the shooting is gang-related.

Salem police are continuing to conduct interviews in hopes of learning more information about what led up to the shooting.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the vehicle described is asked to call police.
