Beaverton students back in school after major budget cuts

Posted: Updated:

The Beaverton School District welcomed back students for their first day of class after having to cut more than $30 million from its budget before this school year.

With fewer teachers, some elementary classrooms have bigger classes than ever.

"We've got sanitizer, we've got wipes, we've got paper, we've got Kleenex, we've got some markers," dad Dave Dennis said as he was dropping his son off at school.

With school district budgets crunched, parents like Dave Dennis are already noticing changes from years past.

"We've got our own school supplies and then, every year the list of things to share with the other students gets a little bit bigger," Dave Dennis said.

Several big school districts in the area were forced to make major cuts to programs and staff last year. In the Beaverton School District, more than 200 teachers were laid off. Fewer teachers mean bigger class sizes and adjustments to lesson plans.

"A lot of the last minute stuff is getting lesson plans ready, really being ready for this week, what are we going to do, how are we going to do it and those adjustments from years past. It's really down to nitty gritty of processing what I am going to do with the kids this week," teacher Aliyah Taylor-Hershel at Bonny Slope Elementary said.

Some elementary school classrooms in the Beaverton District could have close to 40 kids. That has some parents concerned about what the next year will bring.

"Who couldn't be? I mean some of the biggest cuts in the past 20 years, I think we're hearing. But, we trust our school and we'll be there to help them," Dave Dennis said.

For the kids, today wasn't about the politics or the budget cuts. It was about the simple stuff.

"Having lots of fun and getting new friends," fourth grader Daniel Dennis said.

Expect traffic impacts tomorrow as Vancouver and Portland public schools start class. Do not forget to slow down in those school zones or you could get a big ticket.
