Use of force by Portland police declines since 2008

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police have been using force far less often over the last several years.

The Portland Police Bureau released a report Wednesday outlining the decline in situations that result in physical injuries involving officers.

Since 2008, incidents involving the use of force have declined from 1,039 to 675 in 2011.

Police leaders said the community expressed concerns about officer' use of force and the bureau has adopted numerous reform measures specifically designed to produce these results.

The reformed approach includes emphasizing de-escalation skills, improved tactical decision-making by officers, improved training and increasing management and civilian oversight processes.

Chief Michael Reese said every use of force report is reviewed by the police bureau.
