PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The original voice of the Portland Trail Blazers has been honored by the James Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Bill Schonely received the Curt Gowdy Media Award during an event Thursday as part of the 2012 Hall of Fame ceremonies.

He gave a speech at a reunion dinner in Springfield, MA.

His trademark phrases like "rip city" and "bingo bango bongo" endeared him to fans of the Trail Blazers, "wherever you may be."

"The Schonz" was the voice of the Trail Blazers from their first preseason game in Longview, WA in 1970 through the 1998 playoffs, calling 2,522 contests during that span.

A three-time winner of the Oregon Sportscaster of the Year award, Schonely was named Oregon Broadcaster of the Year in 1995.

In 2002, "The Schonz" was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.

He called the team's one and only NBA championship victory in 1977 by shouting, "The game is over!" as the Blazers beat the Philadelphia 76ers.

In recent years, he has served as an ambassador for the team and can still be found at the Rose Garden on game nights.
