PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A TriMet bus driver was awarded the Portland Police Bureau's Commendation Medal Thursday afternoon for stopping his bus to help a woman under attack last May.

Larry Porter was just starting his shift when he saw a man violently beating a woman in a grassy area at SE 96th Avenue and Division Street.

"I'm sure lots and lots of cars went by," Porter said. "I heard people yelling out their windows to stop but nobody got out their cars to help."

Porter said he pulled over, secured his bus and then ran over to pull the man off the woman. That was when Ronald Plumb ran over to help. The two men held the assailant down until police could arrive and arrest him for disorderly conduct.

Porter and Plumb were given plaques during Thursday's award ceremony for rushing over to help the woman.
