Firefighters conducting controlled burn in north Portland

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Firefighters were conducting a controlled burn of 2 acres in the Baltimore Woods Natural area of north Portland on Friday.

Officials said the burn, which started at noon, will reduce highly flammable invasive weeds like the Armenian blackberry, reed canary grass and Scot's broom. Those weeds typically increase the risk of uncontrolled fires in that area.

Due to light smoke possibly lingering in the air Friday, visitors are encouraged to avoid the natural area. The Portland Fire Bureau will monitor the burn site for three days.

In addition to Baltimore Woods, there's a second controlled burn scheduled for Monday at the Elk Rock Island Natural Area.
