LONGVIEW, WA (KPTV) -
A high school player collapsed during basketball practice at Mark Morris High School in Longview.
Spencer Best, 16, suffered a cardiac arrest at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement from his parents, but he's been updating family and friends about his recovery on Twitter.
The sophomore was listed in serious condition at Randall Children's Hospital in Portland on Tuesday.
Longview firefighters said the school resource officer was the first person to respond to the teen and was assisted by a coach and a parent in performing CPR right away.
"The kids were running up and down the court and Spencer collapsed, fell flat on his face," said parent Bill Brill.
Firefighters credit the teamwork of the people in the gym for helping to save the boy's life.
Paramedics then took over and Best was taken to St. John Medical Center in Longview before being flown by Life Flight to Randall Children's Hospital.
Tuesday afternoon he wrote on his Twitter account that surgery was successful. Previously he tweeted that he could be home on Friday.
"Thank u everyone!" he wrote on Twitter. "I am truly blessed to be around such great friends! I will hopefully be home Friday! If u want to call me go ahead."
