PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
People throughout Oregon remembered Sept. 11, 2001 on Tuesday and paid tribute to the nearly 3,000 people killed that day in the terrorist attacks.
Gov. John Kitzhaber ordered the flags at public institutions flown at half-staff throughout the state.
Police and firefighters in Portland, Vancouver and all throughout the metro-area hosted ceremonies featuring guest speakers and presentations.
"It always touches your heart a little bit when you think about the terrible loss that day and I think for us, as firefighters, it just touches a little more close to home obviously because we can feel what they're feeling and understand where they're coming from," said Lt. Damon Simmons of Portland Fire & Rescue.
Other groups and agencies throughout the region hosted fundraisers for victims' families, dinner events and vigils Tuesday night.
