OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -
A man from Oregon was killed in the attack on a U.S. consulate in Libya.
The family of Tyrone Woods confirmed his death from their Oregon City home on Thursday. He was 41 years old.
"He always walked on the cutting edge and he loved excitement and he loved danger," said Woods mother Cheryl Bennett.
Woods was a graduate of Oregon City High School, where he became a state champion for wrestling.
Bennett says Woods had retired from the Navy after two decades of service to his country, and volunteered for the mission at the US consulate in Libya.
"After 20 years I thought he was finally safe at home, and were done with all that, we had made it. I never thought this would happen to my son, my child, my special Navy SEAL," said Bennett.
Four state department employees were killed during Tuesday's attack in Benghazi including Chris Stevens, the American ambassador to Libya.
"Something went dreadfully wrong, obviously, dreadfully wrong. I think if he could have gotten the ambassador out, he would have done it," said Bennett.
CNN reported Woods was a former Navy SEAL commando working as a diplomatic security officer at the consulate.
"Tyrone's friends and colleagues called him 'Rone,' and they relied on his courage and skill, honed over two decades as a Navy SEAL," said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
He had a wife and three sons, including one who was born just a few months ago.
"I've lost the child I carried for nine months, that I've nurtured, that I've loved," said Bennett.
"You watch them grow up and you only want the very best for them, you want them to be safe, but when they grow up you can't do that anymore. My son died doing what he wanted to do, protecting people, he was a hero."
