THE DALLES, OR (KPTV) -
Investigators have identified the man shot and killed by police in The Dalles.
Officers were called out to reports of a rape in progress at 750 Hostetler St. at about midnight Tuesday.
They found both the victim and suspect, Gerald Stowell Jr., 50. Oregon State Police said Stowell lived at the home.
Some officers took the victim to a hospital while others remained at the home with the suspect.
They said Stowell was initially cooperative with the investigation.
But at one point, state police said, the suspect came out of a bathroom in the home with a large, kitchen-style knife.
Investigators said he threatened the officers, who then drew their guns and ordered the man to drop the knife.
Both officers shot the suspect, according to OSP. One of the officers then performed CPR, which continued until paramedics arrived.
The man died at the scene.
Both officers are on administrative leave. That is standard operating procedure in any officer-involved shooting.
Stowell was arrested a few years ago for a parole violation. He had also been arrested on sexual abuse charges dating back to 1988.
