WOODBURN, OR (KPTV) -
Woodburn police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead Tuesday afternoon.
Officers said 28-year-old Michael McGovern was shot near the intersection of Hardcastle Avenue and Gatch Street just after 4:30 p.m.
McGovern was alive when he was taken to the hospital, but he later died.
"He was a good dad to his daughter. He was there for his girlfriend," said his cousin Adriana Juarez.
Deputies released a photo of McGovern Wednesday taken when he was booked into the Marion County jail on Aug. 2.
"He was a real calm and quiet person, but when you got to
know him he was really funny and sweet," said Juarez
Investigators at the scene did not immediately reveal any information about a possible suspect in this case
"We're trying to get closure," said Juarez. "Whoever
did it, justice needs to be served."
Police set up a large perimeter to search for the shooter, and a nearby school entered lockdown mode despite it being after school hours.
Then, on Wednesday, a search and rescue team was looking for evidence near the shooting scene.
"He was kinda rolling around. I thought he was just
horsing around, but I noticed his white T-shirt was kind of bloody towards
the back or the side area," said Kim Green-Delatorre, who happened to be
driving by after the shooting.
Authorities are still interviewing witnesses about what led to the gunfire.
Anyone with any information regarding this case is asked to call the Woodburn Police Department at 503-982-2345.
