Navy uniforms stolen from lieutenant visiting Portland

Posted: Updated:

A thief stole thousands of dollars worth of uniforms from a Navy lieutenant visiting family Portland.

Police said his car was burglarized while parked outside of his brother and sister-in-law's home on Southeast 11th Avenue in Sellwood.

Lt. Patrick Stone told Fox 12 he woke up around 5:30 a.m. Monday to a shattered window and a missing garment bag.

"Out of any bag in the car they could have taken, that was by far the worst," Stone said.

He said the thief stole at least five of his uniforms, including his dress blue suit and multiple sets of khaki uniforms.

His family and their neighbors heard the crime in progress, but it was too late.

"We heard a smash, followed by a car alarm," said sister-in-law Kirsten Stone.  "My husband leaped out of bed; we could hear some scuffling and expletives and the car peeling off."

Portland police said the suspect vehicle is described as a late 1980s white Chevy pickup.

Meanwhile, Patrick Stone, who's transferring to California from Washington, is now on his way to San Diego without his custom fitted uniforms.

"It's going to cost me a lot, and it's going to take time to get them replaced," he said.

He estimates he'll have to pay at least a couple thousand dollars to buy new uniforms.

But beyond money, the thief now has the medals and honors displayed on his uniform, including a submarine warfare insignia with his name engraved on the back.

He and his family just want the bag returned.

"I'm hoping they come to the realization that they stole military uniforms, and maybe they'll think twice about stealing something again," he said.
