THE DALLES, OR (KPTV) -
A doctor from The Dalles who took advantage of women while they were under anesthesia learned his punishment Tuesday.
Dr. Frederick Field pleaded guilty to rape in the first degree and 11 counts of sex abuse in the first degree. With credit for time served, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison
Today in court, Field listened as victims got up to speak one last time before his sentencing. Some spoke through their lawyers, others wanted him to hear how his crimes have affected their lives.
"I've been attempting to understand and live with the emotional anxiety and stress it has caused me and the people who are a part of my life who love me, who love me very deeply," one victim said.
Field was charged in August 2011 with rape and felony sexual abuse. He took advantage of the women where he worked, at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles. He worked there for five years.
"Today, I know that I will never understand why you betrayed me and others," another victim said. "You are broken. I no longer expect answers from you, because you have none. You have nothing to offer and you have made yourself obsolete."
Tuesday's change in plea came after lengthy negotiations between the district attorney and Field's lawyer.
Field's mother, Joan, said after the proceedings that she intends to keep fighting for her son.
"There's a lot of money involved here and I think a lot of people are in it for the money, I'm sorry to say," she said.
Field is married and has two young children. Once he completes his sentence, he will have to register as a sex offender.
