Gresham proposing monthly fee for households and businesses

GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

People living in Gresham could be charged a monthly fee because of it.

The mayor has proposed a fee of $7.50 for businesses and households in the Gresham. That includes renters.

The money would be used to maintain city services, according to the mayor's office.

The city's website said Gresham's permanent property tax rate of $3.61 per $1,000 assessed property value won't support the community's basic needs any longer.

Gresham has cut 70 positions citywide since 2008.

The mayor's office said a fire station may have to close if a fee is not approved by the city council.

The mayor believes the monthly charge would produce $3.5 million a year. The goal is to collect the fees beginning in January 2013.

The city will host town hall meetings to discuss the proposal starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 1333 NW Eastman Pkwy.

Another meeting is scheduled Thursday, followed by meetings on Oct. 2, Oct. 3 and Oct. 10.

For more details and meeting times, go to the city's website.
