SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Reports of a suspicious package led to the evacuation of a building at the Capitol Mall in Salem.

At about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, an Oregon State Police sergeant noticed a suspicious package that arrived via U.S. Mail at the agency's headquarters, 255 Capitol St. N.E.

It was a prepaid box about 8" by 10" in size. There's no word yet about what made it suspicious.

The building was evacuated and Capitol Street was closed directly in front of the building between Court and Chemeketa streets.

About 600 people are employed in the public service building.

The OSP Explosives Unit eventually determined that the package did not contain any explosive material.

The building was reopened shortly after 4 p.m. Capitol Street was open again by 4:20 p.m. after being closed for 90 minutes.

Detectives are continuing to follow up on this incident.
