Family and friends gathered in Beaverton on Thursday to celebrate the life of a 17-year-old boy hit and killed just blocks from his home.
Max McGregor was walking on the sidewalk in Aloha when a driver veered off the road earlier this month and hit him, investigators said. What happened to him was 100 percent preventable, a family member said.
The family's focus on Thursday was to celebrate his life.
"He was one of the amazing ones. He was kind and funny and smart and compassionate. And I was just so… you know, I was his mom. But I really liked him as a person, too. And I'm gonna miss that person," said McGregor's mother, Peggy McGregor.
Family friend Dillon Prickett said Max McGregor was gifted, kind and soft-spoken, but he had the potential to bring changes to the world.
"Thinking about Peggy a lot. She's like my mom. What she's going through… I could never even begin to imagine at all. And I feel like I lost a brother way too soon. Way too soon," Prickett said.
Max McGregor had just stepped off the bus near his home on 185th near Sandra Lane when a car driven by Michelle Young, 41, went off the road and hit him, investigators said. Young's family told FOX 12 shortly after the crash that she suffered a seizure earlier in the day and was driving herself home from the hospital when the crash happened.
Max McGregor had just started his junior year at the Health and Science School in Beaverton.
Jeremy Stillwell, youth pastor at Beaverton Foursquare Church, said Max McGregor left an impression on him the first time their paths crossed five years ago.
"He's one of those kids that you meet him and you instantly want to be his friend. 'Cause he had such a soft-spoken, gentle spirit about him," Stillwell said.
"For me, part of being a mom is taking care of my kids, but also taking care of my kids' friends. And so, that's part of what today is about," said Peggy McGregor.
Those who gathered for Max McGregor's memorial service on Thursday said they came to celebrate his life and wished the day never had to come.
"Looking at this from the outside, I'd say don't be quick to judge people 'cause you're not going to find a much better human being from Max McGregor," Stillwell said.
A memorial fund has been set up at U.S. Bank in Max's name.
Detectives are close to finishing up their investigation, they said. They're still waiting for the toxicology test results to come back to figure out if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
Young has not been charged with any crime.
Young's family said their hearts go out to the McGregors.
