Vancouver considers limiting sale, use of fireworks

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Vancouver may soon limit Fourth of July Fireworks to just the Fourth of July.

The Vancouver City Council is moving forward with a plan that would cut the amount of days personal fireworks can be bought and used for the holiday.

The proposed ordinance would reduce the number of days fireworks can be sold in Vancouver from seven to three. Those days would be July 2-4, according to the city.

If passed, the new law would also make it illegal to shoot off fireworks at home on any day besides the Fourth of July.

The ordinance received a first reading Monday and a public hearing is now set for 7 p.m. Oct. 1 at City Hall.

If councilors approve it after the public hearing, the new law would begin in 2014. The city said a change to the fireworks ordinance requires 365 days notice.

As part of the proposal, the city would give $10,000 toward fireworks education and enforcement from the 2013-2014 general fund budget. The same payment would be applied toward the 2015-1016 budget, as well.
