Doernbecher Children's Hospital receives $250,000 grant

Posted: Updated:

OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland received a Hope Grant for $250,000 from the Hyundai Hope on Wheels program.  The hospital is one of 41 pediatric cancer research centers across the nation receiving the gifts.

The funds will be used to support the work of pediatric oncologist Bill Chang, M.D., Ph. D.  The grant will lay the foundation for the use of new drugs being tested to treat patients with Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma.

Area children affected by cancer were on hand at the Wednesday event to place their hand prints on a canvas and an official Hope On Wheels lab coat to commemorate their brave battles with cancer.

During the month of September, which is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Hyundai Hope On Wheels will donate $10.25 million to support cancer research projects at Children's Oncology Group member institutions across the country.

The program also gave Doernbecher's a similar grant in 2011 worth $100,000.
