Vancouver family suspects burglary wasn't random

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A Vancouver family says they're devastated after thieves broke into their home and stole more than $40,000 worth of jewelry, antiques and electronics.

Police said someone targeted Shirali Petel's home on Northeast 128th Court on Monday morning.

Petel said the thieves waited until the home was empty and then broke in by shattering the back glass door. Once inside, they stole a laptop, iPod, designer bags and gold jewelry that had been passed down for generations.

Petel said she doesn't believe they were a random target.

Recently, a family friend had her house broken into and was surprised to find a directory containing the names and addresses of other Indian families in the community was stolen.

"When I realized that other homes had been hit the exact same way, it had to be someone who had broken into other homes and got the pattern down," Petel said.

The tight-knit community often shares a list of names and addresses of many Indian families in the area.
