PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
The first component of the Schnitzer Campus is taking shape at Oregon Health Science University.
The OHSU/OUS Collaborative Life Sciences Building will include teams from OHSU, Oregon State University and Portland State University under one roof.
The goal is to expand teaching facilities and learning opportunities, while also creating new jobs.
The 500,000-square-foot building will include lecture halls, classrooms, labs and research centers.
Technological highlights will include a low-vibration lab called the OHSU Center for Spatial Systems Biomedicine, which will focus on structural and mechanical properties of cells and tissues.
That center is one of two separate components being completed simultaneously. It's included in a $135 million project funded by $43 million in OHSU philanthropy and $92 million in OHSU institutional funding.
The second part of the project is a joint $160 million venture funded by OHSU and the Oregon University System. It is paid for with $110 million in state bonds, an anonymous $40 million gift from an OHSU donor and $10 million in TriMet support for a new transit station adjacent to the building.
The goal is to have people working in the building by August 2013. Full completion is expected by spring 2014.
