PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Annual maintenance tasks on the Hawthorne Bridge will require multiple lifts today and again next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Among the tasks crews will perform will be greasing the long cables that open the drawbridge. The greasing will require about four extra bridge openings lasting 8 to 10 minutes.
To avoid delays, commuters can use alternate crossings such as the Morrison Bridge or Burnside Bridge.
The Hawthorne Bridge opened in 1910 and is the oldest working vertical lift bridge in the country. It is opened at least once every eight hours to keep it in good working order.
