Pregnant elephant works out at Oregon Zoo

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

What to expect when an elephant is expecting. It's on the minds of everyone at the Oregon Zoo as Rose Tu makes it into the 19th month of her second pregnancy.

The elephant mother still has about two months before 4-year-old, Samudra, gets a new baby brother or sister.

Zoo keepers are preparing Rose Tu for the birth of a baby that weighs a few hundred pounds.

They help her through regular workouts and stretches to build muscle for the feat which is set to happen this November or December.

After the baby arrives, Rose Tu will depend on her entire elephant family for help.

Dad Tusko, brother Samudra and aunt Shine will all have a part in raising the new elephant calf.

Keepers say they aren't sure if it's going to be a boy or a girl. They say Samudra surprised them after tests falsely revealed he was a girl.
