Detectives with the Cowlitz County sheriff's office have arrested a Kelso man for felony murder in the death of a infant boy.
Christopher Everett, 20, is now facing manslaughter and murder charges.
Cowlitz County sheriff's deputies said the 1-month-old baby boy died of injuries consistent with "shaken baby" syndrome.
Deputies began their investigation Friday afternoon when someone called 911 from a home in the 30 block of Willow in Kelso. The caller reported a baby had stopped breathing.
Investigators said the baby boy, named James Childers, was taken to St. John Hospital and then transferred to OHSU by lifeflight.
Deputies said the child had bruising in the front and back of his brain, broken ribs, a broken arm and abdominal injuries. They said doctors believed the injuries were consistent with physical abuse and not accidental in nature.
They said the baby had been seen by a pediatrician for a rash at a Kelso clinic Friday morning and appeared to be healthy.
They said Everett was caring for the infant Friday afternoon, that he lives with the baby's mother.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of the baby's death.
Anyone with information about the case should call the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office at 360-577-1206.
