Sick horses seized in Lewis County

Posted: Updated:
MORTON, OR (KPTV) -

Lewis County authorities seized nine horses suffering from severe malnutrition and dehydration in Morton.

One horse had to be euthanized due to its poor condition at an advanced age. The horses on the property ranged from a foal to a 15-year-old mare.

Deputies contacted the owners after receiving reports of animal neglect and provided education to them in an effort to allow the owners to keep the horses and bring them back to a healthy condition.

The owners of the horses were asked to have a veterinarian consulted for assessment and guidance.

Investigators said the owners did not follow through, so Lewis County officials took action on Friday with a search warrant to take the animals.

The seized horses were transported to various animal rescue groups to receive treatment and care with the goal of a full recovery.

Terry Simmons, 58, and Joanne Simmons, 65, both of Morton, are being referred to the Lewis County Prosecutor's Office for animal cruelty charges.
