TriMet unveils new buses

Posted: Updated: Oct 3, 2012 03:41 PM

The next generation of TriMet buses will be on the streets in time for Thursday's morning commute.

The first five of TriMet's new 55 buses will be put into service right away. Three new buses will then be added every week.

The new busses will initially run on Line 9-Powell Boulevard and Line 72-Killingsworth and 82nd Avenue. That will keep them close to the maintenance and operations staff most familiar with the new vehicles.

As new buses are added to the fleet, they will run on more lines.

The new buses are the first in three years for TriMet. The agency reinstated its annual bus purchasing program after suspending it in 2009 due to economic reasons.

Federal grants make up 93 percent of the cost of new buses.

Four of them are hybrids, while the rest run on diesel. They are all equipped with technology that should make them fuel efficient.

Riders will notice bigger windshields, larger side seating, brighter LED lighting, vinyl seats and a more gradual sloped boarding ramp for riders using mobility devices.

TriMet will be adding 68 new buses next year, as well.
