Those wishing to check out Vista House will have to wait a few months. The historic building is being closed until January while a nearby highway is restored.
The Oregon Department of Transportation says it will repair the viaduct of Crown Point and portions of Historic Columbia River Highway. The viaduct surrounds Vista House. The building itself received some repairs in 2005.
Through Dec. 31, cars, people and bicycles will not have access to the highway from Larch Mountain Road to Latourell Falls. On Jan. 1, Vista House is expected to reopen on its winter schedule. Traffic restrictions have yet to be determined.
The Historic Columbia River Highway opened in 1916, followed by Vista House two years later. The highway was the main route through the Gorge until Interstate 80N opened in 1963. Seventeen years later, it was renamed Interstate 84.
