People camp out for opening of Newberg Goodwill

NEWBERG, OR (KPTV) -

People camped outside Goodwill's newest store in Newberg for the grand opening.

Workers said the earliest shopper stayed overnight in his car starting at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday after driving from Olympia to shop at the new store.

The Newberg Goodwill opened for business at 7 a.m. Thursday. After only 15 minutes, 372 people had already gone through the doors.

Workers said five college students from George Fox University also camped out at 1 a.m. in their sleeping bags on the cement.

The 10,000-square-foot building at 2210 Portland Rd. includes two electric vehicle charging stations. It's the first time Goodwill has installed these devices at one of its stores, and the organization said if they prove successful, they will be offered at more outlets.

The Newberg Goodwill will employ as many as 35 people.

A Goodwill drop-off site in Newberg received more than 1.2 million pounds of donations last year from more than 20,000 donors.
