Central Catholic welcomes home an Olympic hero

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An Olympic silver medalist was given a hero's welcome at Central Catholic High School Friday.

Galen Rupp graduated from the school in 2004. The track and field star earned a silver medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London in the 10,000 meter race.

He is the current American record holder at that distance with a time of 26:48:00.

Central Catholic students and staff gave him a big ovation during a homecoming assembly to welcome him back to his alma mater.

Rupp also competed for the University of Oregon.
