NEWBERG, OR (KPTV) -

Family and friends gathered Thursday to remember a little boy hit and killed by a car.

The child was hit on Monday afternoon and later died at a Portland hospital from his injuries.

The family identified the toddler as Alex Gastelum Salinas. A funeral was Thursday at St. Peter's Church in Newberg.

"We want Alex to be remembered as a happy baby that was taken away from our family," said cousin Pablo Pena

According to officers with the Newberg-Dundee Police Department, someone called 911 at about 3:45 p.m. reporting that a car had struck child in a stroller on Fourth Street near South Meridian.

Alex's sister, Jessica Garcia, told FOX 12 she was pushing her brother in his special race car stroller with their 13-year-old cousin.

Jessica said they were on their way to the park, and already in the middle of the road, when a car came out of nowhere.

"The car, literally just snapped out, and my little baby brother just went flying," Jessica said.

"I was in the street on my knees begging for somebody to help me, I was in so much panic and then Alex looked at me and closed his eyes. I was like 'Alex wake up, wake up,' but he never did."

Police officers and firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes and medics rushed the boy by Life Flight to Emanuel Hospital for treatment. Alex later died at the hospital.

"Our family right now is very hurt," said the boy's brother Javier Garcia. "It's very tough. Very tough."

The driver of the car stayed at the scene and has been fully cooperating with investigators, police said. He has been identified as Derick Wiltshire of Newberg.

The crash is still under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information is urged to contact Officer Drew Boggs.

He can be reached by calling 503-538-8321.

The family has set up a "Memorial Fund for Alex" through First Community Credit Union.
