EUGENE, OR (AP) -
A Eugene police report provides new details about a punch thrown by Portland mayoral candidate Jefferson Smith at a party almost 20 years ago.
The report partially contradicts the version of events provided by Smith at a news conference last week.
Smith said he did not know the woman, and was only defending himself after she charged at him under the mistaken belief he had shaken the couch on which she was sleeping.
But according to the police report, the woman told officers that Smith had tried to pick her up at a different party earlier that night and she repeatedly rejected his advances.
Smith was charged with assaulting the woman, but the misdemeanor was dropped when he paid her medical bills and did community service.
