Two-alarm fire damages tavern on NE Alberta

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters responded Wednesday to put out a two-alarm fire at a building that houses apartments and businesses on Northeast 18th Avenue and Alberta Street in Portland.

Crews were first called out just before 6 a.m. and rushed to make sure everyone was accounted for.

"That was our primary concern when we arrived - make sure everybody was out," said Inspector Ron Rouse, a Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman.

Crews called for a second alarm because flames tend to spread faster in old buildings, but firefighters were able to knock down the fire quickly.

There are three businesses and three apartments in the building, and investigators are now trying to determine where the fire started. There was extensive damage in a tavern below the apartments.

No one was injured in the fire, and one cat was rescued by firefighters.

Three people were displaced.
