Oregon lottery cancels Scratch-it for Schools event

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Oregon Lottery is canceling the Scratch-It for Schools program.

The annual event featured teams scratching as many lottery tickets as possible in five minutes, with the money going to public schools across the state.

Fox 12 reporters and anchors have been regular participants in the event, which began 16 years ago.

Lottery Director Larry Niswender said the mission of the program was to deliver the message that lottery dollars are allocated to public schools. Recent research shows that Oregonians now cite "schools and public education" most often when asked where lottery funds go.

"We have decided to pursue a new path, find a suitable replacement to this lottery educational and promotional effort, and close out the current Scratch-it for Schools program," Niswender said.
