A deputy who stopped to help a stranded motorist in Salem ended up arresting that man and his passenger on drug charges.

The deputy spotted the stopped car on Ankeny Hill at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday with a man looking under the hood. Senior Deputy Jerry Wollenschlaeger offered assistance to the man, who he said became very nervous.

Eric Kooyers told the deputy he was from California and his girlfriend was driving the car but had gone to Walmart to buy a new radiator. The car had New Mexico license plates.

The deputy said the explanation didn't make any sense and he then spotted a meth pipe hanging from the rearview mirror. There was also a strong odor of fresh marijuana coming from inside the car.

The passenger, Eric Forsgren, 42, of Portland, identified Kooyers as the driver. The deputy said there was no room inside the car for a "girlfriend," with a large diamond-plated truck storage box in the backseat.

A record check revealed that Forsgren was wanted on numerous warrants from Clackamas County. Kooyers was on parole for marijuana possession.

The deputy said Kooyers admitted smoking methamphetamine a few hours earlier. Kooyers is also accused of being in possession of a second meth pipe.

Both men were arrested.

Kooyers gave consent to search the car, according to investigators, and deputies found coffee cans partially filled with coffee beans and three pounds of marijuana inside the metal box.

Coffee beans are routinely used by drug dealers when transporting drugs, deputies said. They are intended to confuse drug-sniffing dogs.

Deputies believe the marijuana was recently purchased in southern Oregon and intended for distribution.

Deputies also found what appeared to be a drug sales log in the car, along with a camera and two cell phones. The keys to the car were found in the brush near where Kooyers was standing when the deputy arrived on the scene.

The men now face several drug charges.
