Keizer teaching assistant arrested on sex abuse charges

Posted: Updated:

A Whiteaker Middle School teaching assistant who works with developmentally disabled children has been arrested on charges of sex abuse.

Keizer police say Jose Moreno fondled three boys over a two-year period. The abuse happened at the school and at Moreno's home, according to investigators.

The Marion County Jail said the 45-year-old was booked Wednesday on six counts of first-degree sex abuse and one count of third-degree sex abuse.

Moreno has worked at Whiteaker Middle School for the past four years. He is a special programs instructional assistant, working with students who have developmental disabilities.

Police have not said whether the victims were in Moreno's class or whether they were developmentally disabled.

A Salem-Keizer School District spokesman told Fox 12 the police investigation involved allegations of misconduct with a student or students.

Police began investigating Moreno after receiving a cross report from the state Department of Human Services Child Welfare.

He is in jail on $130,000 bail and is set to be arraigned in court at 3 p.m. Thursday.

The district said he worked as an instructional assistant at Clear Lake Elementary School in Keizer from March 2008 through June of that year and was rehired in September 2008 at Whiteaker Middle School in Keizer.

The district put Moreno on paid administrative leave while police investigate.
