A group opposed to adding fluoride to Portland's water supply said they have collected more than 43,000 signatures from people who feel the same way.
Clean Water Portland filed all those signatures with the city of Portland Thursday. The group said they have more than twice the number of signatures needed to put the issue to a public vote and they managed to do it a day before the 30-day deadline to turn them in.
The Portland City Council approved an ordinance in September to add fluoride to the city's water supply with the goal of fighting tooth decay.
The city auditor's office said they are just beginning the process of certifying the signatures turned in Thursday. They hope to have an official and certified count by the end of next week.
