A 41-year-old man is accused of breaking into a house in the Goose Hollow neighborhood while running from Portland police.

On Thursday, just before 2 a.m., a police sergeant attempted to stop a pickup on Southwest Broadway Drive, just south of the Interstate 405 overpass for traffic infractions, detectives said.

The driver of the truck did not stop and kept driving up Broadway at speeds of 35 to 50 miles per hour as police trailed behind him.

Eventually, police said the driver turned onto Southwest Vista Drive and headed back toward Portland.

The pickup ran a red light at Southwest Park Place and the sergeant terminated the pursuit, officers said.

The driver of the truck stopped south of Burnside Street and ran west into the Goose Hollow neighborhood, FOX 12 learned.

Central Precinct officers set up a perimeter and two police K-9 units responded to begin tracking the suspect.

As officers were setting up the perimeter, a woman told police someone had just tried to take one of her window screens off her apartment window, but she scared him away.

Officers and a K-9 unit searched the neighborhood and came across a home in the 2300 block of Southwest Cactus Drive, where a basement door was ajar, police said.

Officers contacted the person who lived there who told them she had two roommates, but neither was home.

She gave police permission to search the house.

In an upstairs bathroom, officers found the suspect hiding between the toilet and shower stall, police said.

He was taken into custody and identified as Alex Loftin.

Loftin faces four counts of first-degree burglary, attempt to elude in a vehicle, attempt to elude on foot and reckless driving.

He also had an unrelated federal warrant, investigators said.

Loftin was booked into the Multnomah County Jail and will make his first court appearance on Friday.
