Keizer teacher assistant in court on charges of sex abuse

A Salem-Keizer teaching assistant was in court Thursday afternoon, facing numerous charges of sex abuse.

Jose Juan Moreno appeared via video link from the Marion County Jail to face seven counts of sex abuse involving three boys.

According to court documents, Moreno sexually abused two of them between January of last year and October of this year.

Keizer police said the abuse took place in one of the restrooms at Whiteaker Middle School, where Moreno worked.

Officials said the abuse also happened at Moreno's home in Salem.

The Salem–Keizer Public School District said Moreno has worked as an instructional assistant at the school for the last four years.

They said he primarily worked with students who have developmental disabilities.

"It makes me furious actually, makes me very furious that this happens," said one parent.

According to the district attorney's office; two of the boys are students at Whiteaker Middle School and both are developmentally disabled.

Parents of kids who go to the school were not happy to hear the news.

"I think it's very unfortunate and now I'm going to have to talk to my kids again because there's so much of this going on in the news and when it's our school, that's even more scary," said another parent.

Investigators said they learned about the abuse from Department of Human Services workers.

The probable cause paper work shows Moreno admitted to police he touched the boys inappropriately and knew it was wrong; but he told police he did it because he wanted to see what it was like.

The district said Moreno worked as an instructional assistant at Clear Lake Elementary School in Keizer from March 2008 through June of that year and was rehired in September 2008 at Whiteaker Middle School in Keizer.

At this time police don't believe there are other victims out there, but if you have information on this case you should contact Keizer Police Detective Tim Lathrop at 503-390-3713 ext. 3481.

Moreno's bail is set at $300,000.

His next court appearance is set for Oct. 24.
