Large boa constrictor caught in NE Portland backyard

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Home video captured the tense moments as a giant snake, believed to be a boa constrictor, was caught in a northeast Portland backyard.

James Bowers found the snake Sunday afternoon while in his yard doing work.

"I feel like something's watching me, or somebody, so I look to the right, and I see this big head of a snake!"

Bowers called over his neighbors, then called 911 since the snake appeared agitated and began striking.

"The police showed up in five cars," he told Fox 12.

However, he said the female officer stood out from the rest, as she tried to coax the snake into capture.

"I was really worried it was going to bite her, but she just kept talking to it," he described.

He said she eventually reached down to grab the snake which coiled around her arm, but she and an animal control officer managed to safely and successfully place the snake in a giant bag.

The snake was transported to Multnomah County Animal Control. A spokesman says it's still not known where the snake came from, but it's believed to possibly have been someone's pet.

They will hold it for a few more days, but if no owner comes forward, they will likely transfer it to a rescue group, according to a spokesman.
