PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
Two men are caught on camera breaking into the jukebox at a southeast Portland bar and getting away with cash.
It happened Saturday night at Tanker on Southeast 49th and Hawthorne. Surveillance video shows one of the men acting as a lookout, while the other wedges a key into the side lock on the jukebox.
Philip Ragaway, the bar's owner, said it's a criminal technique called "bumping." The thief bumps his shoulder into the lock to bust it open.
Ragaway said the thieves got away with less than $50, but they caused at least $200 in damage. He said crooks use the same method to break into other electronic machines, as well.
It's frustrating to business owners, he said, because it's a petty crime that ends up costing them much more than just the money that's stolen.
"It's hard to understand why someone would go to so much trouble to grab some chump change and cause hundreds and hundreds of dollars damage," he said.
If you recognize the men involved in this case or know anything more about it, call Portland police.
