I-5 open again after sleepy driver crashes fish truck

TUALATIN, OR (KPTV) -

A driver on Interstate 5 fell asleep while behind the wheel of a commercial truck that was pulling a trailer loaded with 20,000 pounds of frozen fish Wednesday morning.

State police said Milan Zeba's truck and trailer traveled onto the shoulder of the freeway and went about 500 feet before returning onto the road where Zeba lost control, and the truck rolled onto its side.

The wreck blocked lanes of I-5 southbound for hours and created a huge traffic backup.

Zeba, a French Canadian, wasn't injured, but his passenger and co-driver, Vlado Crevar, was taken to Oregon Health & Science University to be treated for a minor injury.

State police said they cited Zeba, a driver for Canada-based Blue Land Transportation Inc., on a violation of failure to maintain a lane of travel.

Though one lane of I-5 reopened at the crash scene at about 7 a.m., major delays persisted in the area throughout the morning.

FOX 12's Tony Martinez reported all alternate routes in the area were also clogged with traffic during rush hour.

Around 11:15 a.m., the crash was finally cleared and all lanes reopened.

In addition to the freeway closure, the I-205 ramp to I-5 southbound was also shut down during the morning commute. Instead, drivers were taken onto I-5 northbound.
