Local hospital using cutting edge equipment to fight infections

Posted: Updated:

A local hospital is using cutting edge equipment in the fight against infections.

Legacy Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin is the first on the West Coast to use ultraviolet lights to destroy harmful bacteria like MRSA and other healthcare-associated infections.

The light called Intelligent Room Sterilization or IRiS and it emits a high intensity UV-C field that destroys harmful bacteria.

During trials at the hospital it took IRiS just six minutes to disinfect the average patient room and 35 minutes to disinfect an operating room.

Meridian Park is now using IRiS in operating rooms and procedure suites on a daily basis, and in patient rooms upon discharge before a new patient occupies the room.

Merdian Park Chief Administrative Officer, Allyson Anderson, says "Our hospital takes pride in having high patient safety and satisfaction ratings and by adding IRiS, we are taking our commitment to patient and staff safety to another level."
