CLACKAMAS COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

It was a homecoming surprise months in the making. Fox 12 was invited to a surprise homecoming at Oregon Trail Elementary School Friday afternoon.

U.S. Army Sgt. Melody Webb, who just returned from Afghanistan, appeared during a special assembly for her daughter's third grade class.

"She has no idea," said Webb backstage.

The school principal announced a special visitor, and Webb walked out with open arms for her 8-year-old daughter.

It was a moment which brought staff, family and friends to tears.

"The military gets so much praise, but we forget to praise families," Webb said.

After eight years of service and four tours of duty, the last one to Afghanistan, she says leaving her daughter is the hardest part.

"I just missed her so much," said Webb. "I'm glad to be home."

Webb's husband, also in the Army, is still deployed. The family depends on Skype, emails and loved ones at home.

"It's our family at home who keeps us together," she said. "Thank God for them."

Now that Webb is home, she said her thoughts and prayers are with the troops still abroad.
