SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A dog is dead and a man is left with a gunshot wound to his foot after a Salem police officer fired his weapon this afternoon.

A spokesperson with the Salem Police Department said two officers were working a call at a home on the 2000 block of Park Avenue Northeast when they were attacked by a pit bull.

Officials said officers Darren Buchholz and Travis Brossard were at the home speaking with people when the dog started to come after the officers.

That's when Buchholz tried to push the dog away, but investigators said the dog continued to attack so the officer pulled his gun out and shot the dog in self-defense.

As the officer was firing his weapon, officials said, Steven Deleon, 38, tried to intervene and jumped in the way of the bullet. Deleon was hit in the foot and taken to Salem Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The two officers involved were not hurt and have been placed on administrative leave.

Oregon State Police will take the lead in the investigation.

Anyone who may have information regarding this investigation is asked to call OSP at 1-800-452-7888.
