PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man who slashed a gas line at his northwest Portland home in an attempt to blow up his house and kill his family is going to prison.

James Speidel was sentenced to 20 years behind bars after pleading guilty to attempted aggravated murder Wednesday.

Deputies said the Nike executive tried to blow up his Bethany-area home with a gas explosion while his family was sleeping inside back in April.

Investigators said the main natural gas line had been intentionally cut and moved to the home crawl space.

Speidel's wife smelled the gas, got her kids out of the house and called for help.

Speidel was arrested a short time later in a field off Northwest Germantown Road.

He did not have a previous criminal history.

Speidel is a father of four children, whose ages range from 3 to 9 years old.
