GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A man was caught on camera reaching across the counter at a Gresham jewelry store and taking off with a $13,500 diamond ring.

Police are asking for your help tracking him down.

The man entered Springwater Jewelers, 35 E. Powell Blvd., just after 5 p.m. Monday.

Larry Lovelin, the store owner, said the man told him he was interested in an engagement ring.

"He wanted to propose to his girl," he said. "He was trying to get me all excited, caught up in the moment with him."

The man asked to see a 1-carat diamond ring with a white gold band.

Lovelin showed him the ring and handed the man the appraisal paperwork. He turned to help another customer, setting the ring down on a workbench behind the counter.

The thief can be seen in the video reaching across the counter and taking the ring. He left through the back door and headed east on Powell.

Lovelin discovered the theft moments later. He said he feels a sense of loss.

"It's one of my pieces here. I feel emotional connection to everything have here, anything I sell," he said.

He is described as a white man, medium build and dark complexion. He had short groomed hair and a close-cropped beard.
