VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A Vancouver man who sent threatening letters to a legislative candidate will be serving time on a work crew.

A judge sentenced Gary Owen to 30 days behind bars today after he pleaded guilty to malicious harassment.

Deputies arrested him back in August after they said he sent two violent and threatening emails to Eileen Qutub, a candidate for the 49th District in Washington.

The man was upset about receiving flyers from Qutub's campaign.

Deputies said one of the emails, in part, read: "I do not know how you got my name and address but I would rather put a bullet in your stupid pathetic Republican (expletive) brain than vote for you. Being a Republican and a woman you have no right ever speaking or having an opinion about anything."

Qutub was in court today as Owen was sentenced and said she hopes Owen has learned a lesson from this.

"I think people that come forward and want to serve the public should do so without fear like this," Qutub said.

Owen was credited for the five days he's already served behind bars and will get to serve the remaining 25 days of his sentence on a work crew without returning to jail.
