East coast storm impacting flights at PDX

Posted: Updated:

Hurricane Sandy is wreaking havoc on air travel across the country.

Thousands of flights have been canceled in and out of several East Coast cities because of the in-coming storm. Some airline passengers at Portland International Airport are feeling the impact.

At least a dozen flights scheduled to depart or arrive at PDX throughout the day have been canceled because of Hurricane Sandy. The flights were scheduled to fly into and out of New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C.

One passenger, who was in Oregon this weekend for the University of Oregon football game, told FOX 12 that her family in New York has already been evacuated to central Long Island because of the storm.

She's scheduled to depart for Houston at 11:15am, but her flight from Houston to New York City has been canceled.

"I checked last night, and I actually tried to call United Airlines to see, because I've never been in this type of situation, to see like what I'm supposed do. And it was 17-hour wait on the phone. And they never actually got to calling me back," Allyson Miller said.

United Airlines ground about 3,700 flights scheduled from Sunday through Wednesday. Delta Airlines said all of its flights from Washington to Boston, and out of New York and Philadelphia are canceled. Both companies are allowing some customers to change their flight plans because of the storm without paying any extra fees.

Subway systems, bus services, and light rail lines in several major East Coast cities are also being impacted because of the storm.

If you do plan to travel out of PDX, call your airline ahead of time to check on the status of your flight.
