Man cleaning out garage accidentally shoots self

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Police are investigating a shooting that injured a Salem man. 

Officers responded to a report of a subject with a gunshot wound at a home on Kathleen Avenue NE on Sunday evening. 

On arrival, Officers found 58-year-old Joe Hernandez in the garage with a wound to his upper abdomen.  

An investigation revealed Hernandez and his wife were cleaning out the garage, going through the belongings of the wife's deceased father, when Hernandez came across a box with a loaded 410 gauge gopher gun in it.

The gun discharged and hit Hernandez in the upper abdomen.  He was transported to Salem Hospital for treatment.   His wound does not appear to be life threatening at this time.

At this point, police said the incident appears to be accidental.
