NEW YORK CITY (KPTV) -

Members of West Linn High School's Mock Trial team were among the thousands of stranded travelers waiting out Superstorm Sandy in New York.

The eight students, two coaches and handful of parent chaperones were scheduled to fly back to Portland Monday, after competing in the Empire Mock Trial event this weekend.

After their flight was canceled, the group spent Monday inside their hotel, located near the Brooklyn Bridge.

"We all feel very safe because where the hotel is, we're surrounded by other buildings. So the wind's not that bad," said Megan Mueller, a senior on the team. "We know that where we are is a really safe place. We're high up on the hotel, so it's not going to flood where we are."

The students stayed busy by finishing homework and class assignments.

"Today in the hotel room, the seven seniors all read A Midsummer's Night Dream to each other so we could get caught up with that," said Mueller. "So that was kind of fun."

The group is now scheduled to fly home Saturday.
