Pepper spray was used when police and protesters clashed at a southeast Portland home Tuesday afternoon.
Supporters turned out for Patricia and Darren Johnson, who have been fighting an eviction order at their home on Southeast Pardee Street.
The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office executed a judge's order Tuesday to force them out.
The home is now boarded up from the inside with many of their belongings still in the house.
Doctors diagnosed Patricia Johnson with a pulmonary disease a few years ago, forcing her to give up her job. The couple said they fought their bank for a modification on their mortgage with no response, until they found out about the foreclosure months later.
Earlier this month, they told FOX 12 they're "taking a stand" with the help of a group called We Are Oregon.
Deputies said the couple complied with the order Tuesday, but they had to call for backup when protesters arrived. Deputies said the protesters held a long sign on a pole and pushed into them trying to take the house back, so pepper spray was used.
"You know, this is what it's come to in America," Darren Johnson said. "Now, on a rainy day in Portland, a family gets kicked out of their home. It's not like we weren't trying."
"They're stealing my home," Patricia Williams added. "And the court system and the police department is allowing this to happen."
Chief Deputy Jason Gates with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said any civil process with regard to the property's repossession doesn't have anything to do with the duty and responsibilities of the deputies.
One protester was arrested for running into the home.
The couple said their possessions are going to be moved into a storage unit, but they vow to continue fighting for their home.
